All-new Volvo XC90 sets new standards with Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS

Volvo Cars' XC90 has been awarded the Top Safety Pick+ rating from the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The XC90 received a full score in all tests (crashworthiness and front crash prevention), excelling in both preventive and protective safety performance. The XC90 also scored top marks in recent Euro NCAP testing – further proof that XC90 is one of the safest cars on the roads today.

"The independent testing result from IIHS once again highlights the exceptional nature of the work we do at Volvo Cars in taking car safety to a new level. Our combination of an ultra-high-strength steel safety cage with a patented front structure, advanced restraints and our standard auto braking system, City Safety, combine to deliver unparalleled performance," said Cecilia Larsson, Director of Volvo Cars Safety Centre in Gothenburg.

    Safety as standard
The IIHS crashworthiness category includes tests covering small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof strength, head restraints and seats. Volvo achieved top scores in all of these tests and was deemed superior in front crash prevention thanks to the standard City Safety technology that is fitted in all new Volvo cars. The superior rating for front crash protection makes the XC90 one of the first cars with standard equipment to receive a 2015 Top Safety Pick+ award.

"Volvo Cars is committed to its vision: by 2020 no one will be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo car. Our work with solving real-life, real-world safety challenges is central to who we are at Volvo Cars. Recent research has shown how effective our auto braking technology is. We have achieved top scores in all independent safety testing that have been carried out. There is no question that the XC90 has set a new standard in car safety," said Cecilia Larsson.

Volvo Cars uses a wide range of data sources – both US, Swedish, and in-house – based on real life accidents and insurance claim statistics as the foundation for many of its safety innovations.

City Safety is the umbrella name for advanced collision avoidance functionality at the Swedish company. Using advanced RaCam, (Radar-Camera) technology positioned in the windscreen, City Safety delivers advanced vehicle-to-vehicle collision avoidance functionality and protects other vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists in a broad range of scenarios.

    Notes to editors:
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, non-profit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses – deaths, injuries and property damage – from crashes on the roads of the United States. To qualify for 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must meet the TOP SAFETY PICK criteria, plus earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.

Volvo XC90 awarded top safety rating by IIHS

Volvo Cars’ XC90 has been awarded the highest possible safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), underscoring its position as one of the safest cars on the road today.

The seven seat SUV was awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating, which is only given to cars that achieve full scores in all crashworthiness and front crash prevention tests and which excel in both preventive and protective safety performance.

“Every Volvo currently rated by IIHS has earned a Top Safety Pick+, we are the only automaker that can claim that proud distinction,” said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, “the XC90 is the next step in our Vision 2020, which states that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by the year 2020.”

The IIHS award follows a decision last week by Euro NCAP, the European safety regulator, to award the XC90 five stars in its 2015 Euro NCAP tests. The XC90 was the first car from any manufacturer to score full points in the Autonomous Emergency Braking Car to Car rear-end tests (AEB City & AEB Interurban).

This means that the XC90 has now received the best possible ratings for safety from the most respected independent assessors of car safety in both Europe and the US.

The IIHS crashworthiness category includes tests covering small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof strength, head restraints and seats. Volvo achieved top scores in all of these tests and was deemed superior in front crash prevention thanks to the standard City Safety technology that is fitted in the new XC90.
The XC90 is built on Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, which prioritizes safety and electrification. The XC90’s performance in the small overlap crash test, one of the most demanding crash tests available, highlighted a new design that deflects the car after impact. This design significantly reduces the potential for driver and passenger injury. Other safety design elements, such as a breakaway brake pedal and deformation zones in the front seat brackets, help prevent serious injuries in a variety of crash scenarios. All of these safety innovations are a result of Volvo’s unprecedented 40 year effort of recording and studying real-world accidents.

The 2016 XC90 has exceeded sales forecasts around the globe, with 57,000 cars sold compared to a forecast 50,000. Demand for Volvo SUVs has been very strong in the United States and the Volvo XC60 has seen a resurgence in sales and interest. The XC60 is also a Top Safety Pick+.

Earlier this month, Volvo became one of the first automakers to commit to making Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) standard on all Volvos with five years. AEB and other important safety technologies are already standard in all new Volvos.
